Following the release of her debut EP ‘Untitled (Read My Mind)’, rising Melbourne-born artist JACOTÉNE returns with a bold and magnetic new single ‘Why’d You Do That?’. Built around a soulful yet strikingly powerful vocal performance, the track blends sharp lyricism with an infectious, hook-driven chorus that lingers long after the first listen.
‘Why’d You Do That?’ showcases JACOTÉNE’s ability to shift gears sonically while staying true to her emotionally charged storytelling. Produced by Cadenza and recorded between Australia and the UK, the track offers a fresh glimpse into the next chapter of her artistry.
“‘Why’d You Do That?’ is what confrontation sounds like. I wrote it in the middle of confusion and heartbreak, after being hurt by someone I trusted. It’s raw and vulnerable but also empowering. When I need a reminder of my strength, this is the song I play. It’s my anthem and hopefully, it becomes the listener’s reminder to trust their gut and never settle for less than they deserve,” JACOTÉNE shares.
The single follows her debut EP ‘Untitled (Read My Mind)’ – a 6-track introduction that showcased her dynamic vocal range and fiercely introspective songwriting, available - here. The focus track ‘Easy,’ co-produced with GhostNote and Ozmoses Arketx, blends funk, jazz, R&B, and touches of afrobeat, paired with a beautifully raw visual.
Tipped by NME as one of their NME 100 for 2025, and featured on the cover of 10 Magazine Australia, JACOTÉNE’s mix of gut-punch lyricism and timeless vocals marks her as a force to be reckoned with, capturing listeners with stories far beyond the young starlet’s age. Fresh from a standout performance at CHANEL’s Métiers d'Art Collection celebration, she’s already earned acclaim on stage earlier this year with key support slots for Tems in Sydney and Melbourne, Pa Salieu in London, and G Flip on their Melbourne and Adelaide tour dates.
Looking ahead, she has a packed summer of shows lined up, including two headline dates in London and European festival appearances across France, Germany, Switzerland, Romania and Belgium.
Unapologetically unique, JACOTÉNE is carving out her place as one of the most exciting new artists of her generation so watch this space!

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
I thank my parents for inspiring my love for music. My living room was always filled with Michael Jackson, Alicia keys, Lauryn Hill, Boney M, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, The Jackson 5 and ABBA. These artists were really the soundtrack of my childhood.
2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

The music that is up next feels the most Jacoténe and I’m mostly excited about performing them live.. these songs especially, helped me let go of all the limitations and expectations, whether from myself or others, that I’ve carried through my creative journey. For the first time, I truly let my creativity take the lead. This new music is purely Jacoténe, no distractions.
4. How would you describe your sound?
I normally like to let the listeners decide on this one, I read a lot of Amy Winehouse and Adele in my TikTok comments, which is pretty cool I think :)
5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?
One of my proudest moments has been witnessing the power of music and how far it can reach. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to see so much of the world because of it.
