Award winning British Nigerian artist Ego Ella May has unveiled the visuals for “Sister”, taken from her newly released sophomore album Good Intentions. Shot by Jelani Pomell and featuring Ego’s real life sister, the video mirrors the warmth and intimacy that runs throughout the record. Co produced with Tom Excell, the track is another example of Ego’s ability to blend soulful storytelling with rich, jazz rooted production.
Produced alongside collaborators including Alfa Mist, Beat Butcha, LVTHER, Melo Zed and TAVE, Good Intentions explores themes of community, vulnerability, liberation and the beauty found in everyday life. Singles including “What We Do”, “What You Waiting For”, “We’re Not Free” and “Don’t Take My Lover Away” showcase the album’s emotional depth, drawing inspiration from writers such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Patti Smith and Joan Didion.
Reflecting on the album, Ego described the songs as “small ideas moving quietly” through her life before gradually taking shape. Compared to the process behind her acclaimed debut Honey For Wounds, she says this project demanded “more listening, more patience, and a whole lot of trust.”
Since emerging with her 2014 EP Breathing Underwater, the South East London artist has continued to carve out a distinct space across R&B, neo soul and jazz. Her debut album earned her Best Jazz Act at the MOBO Awards and Best Vocalist at the Jazz FM Awards, while her music has featured in acclaimed TV series including Insecure and Sex Education. Most recently, Ego made her Canadian live debut at the Montreal Jazz Festival and sold out her headline show at Ronnie Scott's.
