Gnarls Barkley - Pictures (Single)
After nearly eighteen years off the clock, Gnarls Barkley are back with purpose, not nostalgia.
The duo of CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse have released Pictures, their first new music since 2008. It is the opening chapter of Atlanta, the long awaited third and final Gnarls Barkley album, arriving next week.
Rather than a reunion lap, Atlanta feels like a full stop. Named for the city that shaped them both, the album completes a story the pair always meant to finish. Life got busy, paths diverged, but the idea of a final record never disappeared. Last year, they carved out the time to do it properly.
Pictures sets the tone: reflective, grounded, and deeply personal. Inspired by Atlanta’s MARTA train system, the song draws on teenage memories of movement and limbo, watching the world pass by through a train window, life unfolding frame by frame. It is a full circle moment that sounds exactly like one.
Gnarls Barkley’s impact hardly needs a refresher. Their debut St. Elsewhere from 2006 was a cultural reset, powered by Crazy, a genre smashing hit that topped charts worldwide. The Odd Couple from 2008 pushed things further, bending soul, hip hop, rock and psychedelia into something unmistakably their own.
Now, almost two decades on, they are closing the book on their own terms.
