Award winning British Nigerian singer songwriter Ego Ella May returns with “Don’t Take My Lover Away”, a tender new single lifted from her long-awaited sophomore album Good Intentions, arriving 20 March.
Written about her husband and produced alongside longtime collaborator Alfa Mist, the song captures a moment of deep love, vulnerability and quiet fear. Ego has shared that it was born during a period when her partner was experiencing health issues, a time that made her confront both gratitude and the fragility of life. Rather than resisting that fear, the song gently surrenders to it, embracing love fully while accepting that nothing is guaranteed. It is a beautiful meditation on presence, devotion and not taking love for granted.
Good Intentions is largely self produced by Ego, with contributions from Alfa Mist, Beat Butcha, LVTHER, Melo Zed, TAVE, Tom Excell and more. Previous singles like “What We Do”, “What You Waiting For” and “We’re Not Free” hint at the album’s emotional breadth, exploring community, liberation, vulnerability and the everyday complexities of being human. The project is also shaped by Ego’s love of literature, drawing inspiration from writers such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Chinua Achebe and Joan Didion.
To celebrate the album, Ego Ella May heads out on a UK mini tour this spring, beginning in Manchester on 29 April, alongside a run of intimate in store acoustic performances at Rough Trade locations throughout March.
With Good Intentions, Ego Ella May once again proves her gift for turning deeply personal moments into music that feels universal, tender, thoughtful and quietly powerful.
