Essence Martins - A Confession (I’m Broke) (Official Video)
Northwest London singer songwriter Essence Martins turns financial struggle into something playful and painfully relatable on new single ‘A Confession (I’m Broke)’, the latest taste of her forthcoming EP It All Comes To End, arriving 29th October.
Written after her card declined while buying lunch and again on the way to a writing session, the track captures the strange contradiction of looking like you have everything together while quietly checking whether you can afford the journey home. Bright, bouncing production gives the song a lightness that plays against its subject matter, as Essence tackles the realities of being a young artist in an increasingly expensive London.
“I’d been gifted clothes for an upcoming shoot. I appeared to have my life together, while simultaneously not having enough money for lunch or the journey home,” she explains. “I wanted to turn that very real experience into something funny and relatable.”
The single follows ‘Can We All Slow Down’, ‘Please Don’t Wake Me’ and ‘Red Velvet’, the latter passing 100,000 streams and earning support from SZA and Troye Sivan. All feature on the seven-track It All Comes To End, a deeply personal project exploring love, heartbreak, money, identity and the pressure to keep up appearances.
Essence will also spend October on the road supporting Nectar Woode, continuing a growing live résumé that already includes shows alongside Cat Burns, Paris Paloma, Maisie Peters, Ego Ella May and Alex Isley.
