Emma-Jean Thackray wrapped up her Weirdo tour at the iconic KOKO last week with a night that felt warm and full of creative energy. She opened the show by reminding everyone that her music, and the space they were in, was a safe place for anyone who’s ever felt different or isolated, instantly setting a really genuine, inclusive vibe.
Backed by her ridiculously talented three piece band on keys, drums, and bass, she brought songs from Weirdo to life with a mix of tight grooves and playful improvisation. Crowd highlights included a huge sing and dance along moment during “Save Me,” a gorgeous run through of “Golden Green” from her Yellow era, and a stunning trumpet solo on “Movement” that had the room locked in. Closing the whole night off with her own dance remix version of "Save Me" where Emma prompted the crowd she wanted everyone to "dance till the sweat dripped down their faces"!
In KOKO’s glowing, ornate atmosphere, the whole night felt like a celebration of connection, curiosity, and just really great musicianship. And with Weirdo earning her a 2025 Mercury Prize nomination, it was the perfect way to close out a big chapter for her.
