Ego Ella May - We’re Not Free (Single)
Ego Ella May Returns with Stirring New Single “We’re Not Free”.
Award winning British Nigerian artist Ego Ella May has released “We’re Not Free”, the second single from her much-anticipated sophomore album, due in early 2026.
Produced alongside South London musician Melo Zed, the track captures a heartfelt message: “You’re not free ‘til everyone else is.” Ego describes the song as a reflection on our shared humanity and the impossibility of turning away from the world’s challenges. “What affects one person affects us all,” she explains. “It’s our duty to care about each other.”
With echoes of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”, “We’re Not Free” channels Ego’s trademark blend of social consciousness and soul, inviting listeners to think about collective care, accountability and hope.
The single follows “What We Do”, her upbeat collaboration with fellow South Londoner Wu Lu, and continues to build excitement for her forthcoming album, the follow up to 2020’s critically acclaimed Honey For Wounds.
Ego’s sound remains rooted in R&B, neo-soul and jazz, a mix that has earned her widespread praise and a nomination for Best Jazz Act at the 2025 MOBO Awards. This year also saw her make her Canadian live debut at the Montreal Jazz Festival and sell out her first headline show at Ronnie Scott’s.
To celebrate five years since her debut, Ego recently reissued Honey For Wounds as a limited 5 Year Anniversary Edition, available now via Bandcamp.
