Aquakultre Returns with Soulful New Single “What Are You Sayin’” and Announces Upcoming Album 1783.
Halifax’s own Aquakultre, the award-winning singer, rapper, composer and storyteller also known as Lance Sampson, is back with “What Are You Sayin’”, the second single from his upcoming album 1783, arriving 6th February 2026 via Next Door Records.
Produced by two-time Music Nova Scotia “Producer of the Year” Erin Costelo and mixed by Grammy-winner Qmillion (Robert Glasper), 1783 promises a rich blend of soul, R&B, gospel, and folk. It follows his acclaimed 2023 album Don’t Trip, which earned a spot on the Polaris Music Prize long list.
Rooted in the history and identity of Black Nova Scotia, “What Are You Sayin’” reflects on self-discovery and cultural belonging. “Growing up in Overtown, Uniacke Square in Halifax, we’d always say, ‘What are you sayin’?’, which could mean anything from ‘how are you?’ to ‘what’s up?’,” says Sampson. “This song is me answering that question in different ways, and asking the listener to do the same. Who are you? What are you sayin’?”
The forthcoming album 1783 takes its name from the year that marked the arrival of the first Black Loyalists in Nova Scotia, the beginning of a distinct African Nova Scotian identity. Across 17 tracks, Aquakultre weaves together family stories, community history, and messages of resilience and pride.
With 1783, Aquakultre continues to shine a light on the brilliance and depth of Black Nova Scotian culture, past, present, and future.
