Premiere & 10Qs: Brother May – Love Is In Demand (EP)

If you haven’t already heard of Brother May you’ve been severely starving your lugholes! Following on from the success of his acclaimed 2019 album Aura Type Orange he’s stepped up once again with Love Is In Demand – a heartfelt, introspective yet heavy-hitting four track EP with some formidable, experimental production and topical bars.

We also had the chance to catch up with the man himself for a quick-fire round of 10 Questions to get some insight on his unique approach to music and the driving influences behind it.

1. Contestant, what’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

Hi, my name’s Brother May and I am a musical artist hailing from London.

2. How would you describe your sound?

Fresh, new and unheard I like to call it a May-sound like my own specific sound.

3. Who/what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

The biggest influence on my music is my day to day life. I’m aware that my environment contributes to my outlook on life but I also like to use my imagination and think outside the box when making music.

4. What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

28th of June 2019 ‘Aura Type Orange’ my debut LP release.

5. Do you have any advice for our readers who maybe trying to play the mad game of music?

Just stick at it man, Rome wasn’t built in a day! It takes dedication, persistence and discipline. Also, people skills help and not putting yourself in a box. Feel the game out a bit and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s my personal opinion, which of course you’re free to take or leave.

6. Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

I’d love to work with:

Diana Ross – I’d love to remake the original song ‘I’m coming out’ with an exclusive Brother May verse, I think that’d be sick.

Stevie Wonder – he is one of the best singers to me and I could learn so much from him musically - we’d make a ‘hit’ for sure.

Celine Dion – She’s really loved in Jamaica – Jamaica is part of my heritage – I think with her vocals and mine in combination – it would be something never before heard, and I always like trying new things out of my comfort zone, working with exceptional artists.

7. What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

I’ve got a bunch of stuff to release, tracks with Kate Tempest and Bunny Hoover. I am also working on tracks with Moor Mother. I am working on a bunch of projects from various artists set to be released on our label CURL (myself, Mica Levi and Coby Sey). I have a lot more on top of that to follow basically. So yeah should be an interesting not too distant future.

8. What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

Ohh this is a tough one, damn, but I’d have to say it’s ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson - still trying to figure out how he managed to make such a body of work, talk about finesse.

9. What’s the best concert you’ve been to and where was it?

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - T in the Park (2005)

10. Name three things you can’t live without?

As an extra treat we’ve actually got the premiere of Brother May performing Love Is In Demand live at The Lexington in Islington earlier this year – it’s gigs like this that helps remind us what live music actually is!
