Tariro ft: Dennis - Ages (Single) + 10 Questions

Stockton singer Tariroreturns with new single ‘Ages’, teaming up with fellow Teessider Dennis for a warm, playful take on post breakup emotions.

Blending bright pop melodies with Afrobeats influences, ‘Ages’ explores that awkward space where a relationship might be over, but the feelings are still hanging around. Tariro and Dennis trade perspectives on wanting to reach out, keeping tabs from a distance and trying to convince themselves they have moved on, balancing the hurt with plenty of personality and humour.

The track continues a strong year for Tariro following her debut release, with performances at The Glasshouse for BBC Introducing and the Utilita Arena during the Ne-Yo and Akon show, alongside a BBC Introducing Track of the Week and support from Youth Music NextGen and Tees Music Alliance. Her varied musical influences and experience writing alongside rappers come through in a style that moves naturally between melody and a sharper, playful delivery.

With its summery production and relatable storytelling, ‘Ages’ turns heartbreak into something made to vibe to. Tariro is also working with CrewGal Creative House and Nrthrn Babyon an accompanying music video, set to arrive later in August.

Tariro sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin What sparked your love for music?

I was about eight years old watching Hannah Montana. I took it way too seriously - I genuinely thought it was a documentary or something - and decided there and then that music was going to be my future. Since then, I've sung everywhere: at home, at school, in church, at university, and even while travelling (mostly tipsy karaoke for that one). It's been this undeniable passion that's followed me through every stage of my life. Right now, it feels like I'm finally chasing it back.

2. Who are some artists that influence you, and who would you love to work with in the future?

I'd love to work with MNEK. I'm always trying to hone my craft as a songwriter, and his artistry, versatility, and influence within the industry are something I really admire. Collaborating with someone like him would be a dream.

3. What projects do you have coming up, and can you give us any information on them?

I've got my next single, "Fury Like Mine," on the way, alongside "Ages" and a few other tracks that will make up my debut EP, Important Nonsense. I'm really excited for people to hear it, I'm getting into my storytelling era and it’s a proper introduction to me as an artist.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Soulful, genre-blending, and fun.

5. What is your proudest moment to date as an artist?

Supporting Ne-Yo and Akon in the VIP Lounge at Utilita Arena Newcastle earlier this year has definitely been a highlight. My biggest regret, though? Being about a foot away from Ne-Yo... and completely freezing. Not a single word spoken. Maybe next time!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to navigate the mad game of music?

Burnout is real... If you get to the point where you feel like giving up, give yourself permission to ‘give up’ - but just for a day. We underestimate the power of a small restart. Sometimes a little rest is exactly what you need to come back with fresh energy and perspective.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

Jenna Cole, Reali-T, CDK, Dennis obviously! The North east is full of talent right now, they're all doing really exciting things, and I think people should definitely have them on their playlists.

8. What albums are currently in heavy rotation for you?

A*POP by Tyla has been on repeat!

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I love a good walk, sometimes a run - That's when I do most of my music listening and find inspiration from different sounds. Moving my body, getting outside, hearing new music just does something for the soul!

10. Name three things you cannot live without when you're in the studio.

  • A little white wine - if I'm writing. Absolutely not if I'm recording!

  • A notebook and pen. Sometimes I'm writing lyrics, sometimes I'm just scribbling or jotting down random words. It's all part of the process.

  • A snack. Right now it's Pringles - any flavour. Sometimes I’m being all healthy and it’s some fruit... but at the moment, a cheeky Texas BBQ tube of goodness wins every time.
