Interview: Sniff, Caneva & Hush One - One Night On Earth (Album)
Yorkshire is set apart musically by the individuality of the artists, traditionally producing the most unique sounding projects as opposed to following trends.
From a place called Sheffield where bassline dominates the mainstream, rappers Sniff, Caneva and producer Hush One released a product of passion; an exemplary hip-hop project that shall stand the test of time and ultimately put their city on the map - “One Night On Earth“, a fourteen track album, featuring Crimeapple, TK One, Figment, Lee Scott & Black Josh.
Although Sniff has long been renowned for his music abilities, emerging alongside Trellion and going on to become a member of the notorious Cult Of The Damned, this project is considered Caneva (the younger brother of Figment) and Hush One’s official debut vinyl release, showcasing their abilities to an exceptional standard set to surpass expectations.
Last year, Sniff caught up with Wordplay Magazine after performing in Manchester on Cult Of The Damned’s ‘It’s Them’ Tour, hosting performances as well as old classics and forthcoming singles, particularly alongside Sly Moon, who hit the city with him afterwards. “There was a lot of gambling, bruv,” laughed Sniff. “After every show, me and Sly ended up in casinos, there was a lot of hedonism.” Sniff confirmed that a new COTD project was “Pretty much wrapped up, sounding sick as well,” continued Sniff. “We shot a video for that in Bournemouth after the show, that should be out at some point, but I don’t have a release date.”
The creation of One Night On Earth began in December 2024, finalising the project in early 2025. It is the official debut of Caneva, the younger brother of legendary Bad Taste member Figment, whom Sniff has collaborated with since the beginnings of his rapping career. Sniff first heard Caneva during a drive, thinking to himself; “Fuck, that sounds like Figment,” exclaimed Sniff. “It was like a generational link up, the next day I got him on the phone, I was like bro, we have to make the tape - that’s how that materialised.”
“He was a big influence for me of course,” said Caneva, speaking of his brother Figment. “I was on to all that shit from like 6 years old so that was definitely going to have an effect on the sound, but also lots of other shit as well, other artists, films, tv shows - too much to list off really.”
“I think we got a good dynamic,” continued Sniff. “And Hush One as well, we have got so many beats - again, with Hush it’s just natural, like I go down there, he sits on his MPC and I use the SP404, and we just jam out beats, like it’s so easy, it’s a really natural process if you know what I mean? Effortless.”
Throughout the album, Hush One uses actual analogue bass, guitars and multiple instruments to create an authenticity to the tracks rarely found in modern projects. “But there are a couple wild card instruments on there too,” added Hush One. “Like the main melody on Polo Jacket which was made with an old Korg synth that used to belong to Phil Oakey.” Throughout the project, the production was entirely handled by Sniff and Hush One, aside from the final track which Sniff produced himself called Donny - “There is one called The Remedy which is totally all Hush One,” revealed Sniff. “But the rest of it is collaboration - for samples, we used the Al Pacino bit from Heat.”
To promote the project, the trio recorded multiple music videos, including one for the track called “Polo Jacket,” revealed Sniff. “Out of the whole tape, Polo Jacket was the first track we recorded for the album; it is dedicated to the UK low-life type, the people that fucks with that shit.”
“The Polo Jacket beat is wild,” smiled Caneva. “As soon as Sniff laid the Polo Jacket verse I knew from there how ill this project would be for real, that shit was insane... The first time we linked, I got to the studio and they’d just finished Sniff’s verse, the follow on from my flow on the hook that Sniff did into his verse was exactly what I had in my mind without even saying.”
“My favourite beat is probably the One Night On Earth instrumental,” added Caneva. “Sniff and Hush cooked that up randomly when we thought the tape was already finished, we had the whole track and video done in more or less two days - shit’s super ill.”
“The Remedy was just a loop I made during a session with Sniff,” explained Hush One. “He fucked with it heavy, so we recorded his verse on there and it kinda just sat on my hard drive for a while until we started working with Caneva where I showed him and the rest is history. It is one of my favourite joints on the album, shit is super dissonant, raw and straight to the point - greazy hip-hop with no gloss on it. There’s a lot of attitude. Sonically, it’s dark and punchy but still has that head-nod feel. Sniff and Caneva’s chemistry really drives it, it feels lived-in, almost cinematic.”
One Night On Earth features a multitude of guest appearances, all worthy of mention; firstly Crimeapple, who has collaborated with Alchemist & Sonnyjim amongst others. The album also has an exclusive verse from Sniff’s own cousin, TK One, who used to rap with Sniff in the early days as the A Street Cartel. The third feature comes from Figment, contributing his first verse to a rap song in close to a decade with an unmissable freestyle. “He is very hard to pin down,” explained Sniff. “He is not really a music guy, you have to get him in that moment. Obviously with Caneva being his brother, I told him, ‘Tell Ben I’m back in Sheffield,’ we went for a couple beers and immediately again it naturally ended up back at the studio and that was the result of it - Figment is one of the illest freestylers I have ever met in my life, for me, getting my cousin, Figment, and Crimeapple, it covers all bases, you know what I mean?”
Later into the project, Blah Records rap icons Lee Scott & Black Josh surprised all by offering to jump on an individual track each; Lee Scott contributing a rare, exclusive verse alongside Figment’s Awkward feature, whilst Josh jumped on a track called Where. “To be honest how the Josh verse came about, I think Sniff sent Josh a demo of something we’d cooked that Caneva had already laid a vocal to,” recalled Hush One.“Then the next thing I knew we got an audio message from Sniff of Josh’s verse and we fucked with it to much to not put it on there - it felt like it fitted with the rest of the album.”
"Obviously them two have never been on a track," explained Sniff, when asked about Lee Scott's elegant yet late feature on the single, Awkward. "So it was like a little cherry on top of the cake - that was always the plan, to get Lee and Figment on that track - it is perfect like that. That one and the Crimeapple joint are doing the most numbers."
Sniff, Caneva, Hush One, thank you for your time.
