Becca Starr - DEFIXIO (EX) DELUXE (Album) + 10 Questions

Scottish hip hop artist Becca Starr returns with DEFIXIO (EX) DELUXE, an expanded project released via In Black Records that explores betrayal, relationships, self-belief and resilience. Balancing vulnerability with defiance, Starr delivers an intensely personal body of work that reflects on difficult experiences while celebrating growth and the power of moving forward.

Opening track “Deep Down” explores the realisation that not every friendship is genuine, while “SPIDERWEBS” looks back on past struggles with the wisdom of hindsight. “Why I’m Still Smoking”, featuring Slippery Trashmouf, ventures into dreamlike territory, while “Feel Me” and “There’s Love” navigate romantic regrets and the courage to embrace vulnerability. Elsewhere, the explosive “GET HYPE” provides a welcome burst of energy, and “What Now?”, featuring Gluco, celebrates the strength of friendships that become family.

Starr's confidence shines through on “Follow The Leader”, while “Matter To Me”, featuring Erin Hephzibah, expresses gratitude towards those who continue to support her journey. “Not Boasting” takes aim at the realities of the music industry before the autobiographical “Brand New” brings the project to a triumphant close. Raw, reflective and unapologetic, DEFIXIO (EX) DELUXE captures an artist turning adversity into strength, proving that even through disappointment and setbacks, her passion for music remains firmly intact.

Becca Starr sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I’ve loved music my whole life! I give a lot of credit to my parents who had quite an eclectic mix of genres they were into when I was growing up. Once I got old enough to form my own tastes, it stayed eclectic! Iron Maiden, Portishead, Missy Elliott…. Just a slice of my tastes as a teenager! I’ve played instruments since I was a toddler, so building music from scratch and infusing a flavour of all my influences is the best fun.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

I’m a massive fan of Gotye, he is a top tier choice. He works out of a home studio like me. So we could have a studio exchange! Also a big fan of what Kojey Radical has done the past few years, would love to sing him a hook!

The real dream would be Bjork. Even if I could just sit in a room while she makes something, don’t even need to collaborate, just to be in her presence would be inspiring I reckon! That said if she wanted me to get involved I absolutely would!! She is a timeless, incredible creator.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

My newest album is a Deluxe release of my album Defixio (Ex)! It has new tracks and is being released by In Black Records who I worked with on my Speak No Evil Album. Defixio (Ex) Deluxe willl be available everywhere on 30th October 2026. I also recently put out a music video for a stomper of a track from the album called Follow The Leader, which you can find on my youtube channel. It’s another music video I’ve made myself and hope you check it out and enjoy.

4. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is quite dramatic, bassy and full of energy. I produce all my own beats and use a lot of my multi-instrumentalist skills to really craft exactly what I’m going for. That being said, I also love using a sample and building around it to metamorphosize it into MY sound. My singing has been described as pretty soulful and I think thats accurate. I do enjoy a power vocal too though so, its quite the mix! I’m very much an alternative artist. Musically and aesthetically.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

My proudest moment so far was probably winning Best Hip Hop at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards. It was a huge surprise as the category was stacked but it really did mean the world to me to be acknowledged.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Be your authentic self and try not to be performative about it. You can be a performer and not be performative. Don’t take everyone’s advice and be confident in your choices as an artist. And most importantly - be honest and kind to yourself. Do the thing.

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

I recently worked with a Scottish artist called Lexicon on his new album The Existential Elk Theory. He’s a really amazing lyricist and has such a great attitude, so go check him out!

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Honestly I keep returning to the last 2 Djo albums! Djo are class! Decide and The Crux are the Records. I'd love to feature vocals on a Djo tune too I canny lie! (Haha).

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I'm a massive gamer! I have some favourites! In the past year I re-played Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima and they both hold up on a second run! Also ridiculously skilled in Fall Guys! All the years playing platformers as a kid like Rayman and Crash Bandicoot paying off!

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Cuppa Earl Grey tea. In all honesty as long as I've got the Earl Grey I'm good! If I have to choose 2 others, comfy clothes….. and one or both of my cats milling about passing judgement on my creative choices!
