PREMIERE: Davide Carbone ft: Kate Watts - Breaking Free (Single) + 10 Questions

Following the success of Finding Myself, BS1 Records returns with another powerful collaboration between label founder Davide Carbone and acclaimed Australian vocalist Kate Watts.

Their new single Breaking Free continues to explore the emotional and melodic depths of vocal drum & bass, blending atmospheric production with raw, expressive songwriting.

Breaking Free delivers Davide’s signature deep, cinematic textures and finely crafted rhythm, elevated by Kate’s soulful vocals and stirring lyrics. The result is a resonant and uplifting journey that speaks to liberation, resilience, and self-discovery.

This latest release marks another standout moment in Davide’s evolving catalogue, which has seen support from genre titans including Hybrid Minds, Noisia, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Ray Keith, and Carl Cox, and features across BBC Radio 1, Apple Music Beats 1, Spotify, Beatport, and Drum & Bass Arena.

Davide Carbone sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I grew up in the early era of video games and I owned a Commodore 64 which had a cool sound chip called the SID Chip ( I still use it to make lead sounds!). Many great composers wrote what we may call ’Techno’ soundscapes today. My older sister was also a vinyl fan so music just became my thing.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Well I have worked with a few major artists and they all inspire me with their ongoing passion and work ethic. I have a strong appreciation for may UK based D&B and Grime artists too.

3. What projects do you have coming up and can you give us any info on them?

I have several releases coming up with various vocalists. I’m excited to share them soon. I also have some collabs in the works with some well known names.

4. How would you describe your sound?

I write a wide range of music across genres and different monikers. Primarily under my own name I am a melodic Drum and Bass artists and have been writing what many people would calll ‘Liquid’ Drum and Bass.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Wow. Too many. Being someone my kids look up to and seeing me being happy doing what I love makes me very proud. I guess whenever I achieve something I thought beyond me are proud moments. Writing music for film or a major video game release or a major event which I do always makes me happy!

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Do you love it enough to do it forever even though people tell you that you’re no good? Then you’re good enough!

7. Are there any artists on your radar right now that we should check out?

The usual suspects for me. I love what artists such as BCee, Etherwood, Pola and Bryson, Calibre and Technimatic are doing.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

As per above!, but my daughter has the limited edition dual coloured Taylor Swift ‘Lovers’ vinyl on rotation in the house. Does that count?

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Hang out with my family, do other things in the studio, go on holiday, watch movies and sport, go to dinner! Pretty normal stuff.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

My Adam monitors and subs. My Neve mixing desk. Scaler 3 as my music making software!
