Blending ’00s R&B and neo soul with jazz influences, North London singer-songwriter, producer, and DJ Ruby Francis shares her new single “Lanzarote,” out today, the fourth track to be taken from her forthcoming self-produced sophomore EP “Pages of Philosophy” set to be released this summer.
The self-produced seven-track EP includes previous singles including the title track “Pages of Philosophy,” which touches on the intense first stages of love and sets the tone for Ruby’s lyricism; “Helicopter,” inspired by a powerful connection and set to a backdrop of her signature lo-fi, bass-heavy production layered with soulful harmonies; and “Back 2 Myself,” co-written with Laura Roy, where Ruby reflects on healing, self-care, and rediscovering herself after a breakup.
New single “Lanzarote” was written on a trip to the picturesque volcanic island, she explains: “I took a girls' trip to rest, reflect and write. It was a really healing trip where many of the songs from the project were written. During this time, I was feeling lost, with grief in my tummy, but in a beautiful place with amazing women by my side. Writing Lanzarote with Laura Roy, we explored that bittersweetness of heartache and healing, the feeling of lost-ness and self-discovery.”
Born to a Jamaican father and an Italian-British mother, Ruby had a musically rich upbringing. Her father, a bass player, performed in bands throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, and her music-loving mother played a pivotal role in shaping her musical journey. Starting young, Ruby took piano lessons at age 10, started writing songs by 11, and began learning production in her early teens. Inspired by artists like Stevie Wonder, Björk, Chaka Khan, Joni Mitchell, Astrud Gilberto, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and The Neptunes, Ruby has created a sound that pays homage to her influences.
Ruby Francis released her debut album, “Archives”, in 2021. Entirely self-written and produced in her bedroom studio, the independent release has garnered over a million streams and includes features from Grammy Award winners and nominee Blue Lab Beats and Laura Roy.
