Ones To Watch 2023

Just before we settle into the Christmas break, it’s time for us to announce our Ones To Watch 2023. Those artists we’ve covered at Wordplay a few times and who we believe are set for an even bigger year next year. Check them ALL out, all of them, then thank us next Christmas.

First up, as a founding member of The Silhouettes Project Asher has been about for a minute. Linking with and kick starting some well known names in the music industry. Our highlight as One To Watch for 2023 comes following his solo releases this year, his recent single with Bel Cobain and we’re sure much more on the table. Keep an eye on Asher Kosher, Eerf Evil and all those affiliated with The Silhouettes Project, it’s always special.

We can’t shout about Meduulla loud enough! A strong favourite of the team, Manchester’s sharp witted lyricist had a great year. Growing in confidence rapidly, seeing live performances, and bars videos she is turning heads in the scene, and rightly so. Trust us, 2023 is the year of Meduulla.

If you’re into UK Rap and haven’t heard Sleep’s Cousin yet, you’re…. well, not into Uk Rap. Popping up all over the scene at live events, well orchestrated music videos, London radio features, clever, well thought out mission for his music, and the genius that is Lieu on the buttons, we’re predicting big things for the East Anglian rapper. You should follow his movements trust us.

When an artist appears endorsed by King Kashmere and signed to High Focus Records you instantly take notice. Both rarely (if ever) get it wrong and if the first few releases are anything to go by then Renelle 893 will be breaking moulds and pushing boundaries next year.

Artists generally pick up the good ones before the followers, and Rudi is no exception. An incredible bassist already playing alongside the likes of Alfa Mist, Loyle Carner, Tom Misch and many others he has honed his craft carefully over the years before releasing his debut album in 2022. Different Forms features Barney Artist, Manny, Berwyn and Emmavie. It’s clear that Rudi has connections and respect in the scene already and we’re excited to see where he moves next.

Already having a huge year this year, Mychelle is becoming a household name in the U.K for Soul. She has come a long way since being spotted by Idris Elba busking in Hackney. Beautifully put together videos, hit singles with the likes of ENNY, it’s sometimes hard to believe that Mychelle hasn’t released an album yet. There’s something building nicely here at the right pace, slowly and carefully, when Mychelle is ready we’re all in for a treat.

Seems strange speaking of Mica Millar like you might not be aware already. To say Mica had a huge 2022 would be an understatement. With the release of Heaven Knows album, winning JazzFM Soul Act of the year, almost a million streams and announced as one of the first acts for next years Love Supreme! She’s even planned a U.K tour next May, so it’s a safe bet that Mica Millar will be one to watch in 2023.
