The Māori-Scottish singer Mara TK returns with his solo album ‘Bad Mediation’. The result, ‘Bad Meditation’, timeless masterpiece, written and produced by Mara himself.

Speaking of the process of making the album he says; “I was offered what was basically a whole studio worth of gear from a friend who was moving overseas. I took a gamble and bought that gear and have spent the last five years learning how to use this shit. I had to bet on my own ability to learn new things so it was scary, but also keep in mind that music, like any other creative form doesn’t have to be perfect - the brush strokes don’t have to be exactly straight”.

Mara says “writing this album has been a form of therapy over the last few years trying to figure out what kind of music I wanted to make next”.

He has weaved his heritage into this album making it captivating and exciting for new listeners and those that already know him from Electric Wire Hustle who have waited in anticipation.

The album kicks off with ‘Highly Medicated’ a psychedelic guitar feel, a deliciously sultry bass-line, layered harmonies and gorgeous ad-libs. I love the outro piano and vocals showing off raw emotion that fades out. The track sees Mara open up about his journey to heal following the death of his grandfather, who was his link to traditional customs in Aotearoa.

‘Colours’ is alternative soul at it’s finest with harmonies that will bless your ears. Also has a psychedelic guitar feel but has warm bass and I think I can hear the sound of bongos, which gives a hint of neo-soul.

If you are looking for an album to sink your teeth this is the one.

Be sure to follow Mara TK for the latest. His music - including Bad Meditation available to stream now.
