VERY FAKE GANG SHOT.jpg

Originally conceived by DJ Moocha and Blessed San to call out all the fake rappers, fake politicians, fake religions, fake people and fake breasts... “Very Fake” soon became an 8 way cypher, with the cream of Uganda’s Hip Hop MCs, joined by MCs from Congo, Kenya and Nigeria. Artist’s on the project are: DJ Moocha, Blessed San, Magugu, Mr Raphimus, Blaq Brandana, Muhinder, Elle Bero, Keya Nemesis and Tushi Polo.

Incorporating 8 unique flows in different languages (English, French, Luganda, Pidgin and Lua). This is a bass heavy Hip Hop classic showcasing no compromise lyrical skills from across the continent and the diaspora. Produced by DJ Moocha, label boss of Programmed Cell Death and resident DJ for original jungle pirate Kool FM (now Kool London).

DJ Moocha sat down with Wordplay Magazine to answer our infamous 10 Questions:

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?

I grew up around constant loud music in my house. This and my neighbour who used to play drums really loud with his window open inspired me to start making music.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?

Too many to mention, would like to work with Kabaka Pyramid, Killah Priest, and Burro Banton. If I could get them all on the same track even better.

3. What are some of the problems you have faced making and releasing the music during the coronavirus pandemic?

The main problem is not being able to test the tracks out on loud sound systems to check they sound right and the crowd response. Also the lack of live events means it’s been harder to showcase anything. Generally I’ve kept busy and tried to use the time wisely though.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Bass heavy with elements of Hip Hop, Dub and Jungle thrown in.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Being paid to go to East Africa and record with a load of seriously talented MCs, singers and players.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music

Have patience. Stick to your guns and try to create something from the heart, not what you think will impress the public.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

All the artists featured on the Very Fake project! Blessed San, Magugu, Elle Bero, Keya Nemesis, Tushi Polo, Blaq Bandana and Mr Raphimus.

Also check out C Wyne Nalakulala, Shoeshine Bwoy, HimKim, Lion Story, Monrhea, Black Fenda, Diesel DML, Agent Kyllah, Justice Osinde and Joyce the 7th Star.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

Dimitri and the Scarecrow - Crass Roots Rap, Busta Rhymes - Extinction Level Event 2, Devon Morgan - One King, Pidgin + Chips - Stagga + Magugu

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

Travelling to where it’s sunny, eating good food and being around nature.

10. Name Three things you can't live without when in the studio?

Strong coffee, inspiration and my Vermona Retroverb.
