PREMIERE - OG The Story - Evolution By Any Means (EP) + Interview

OG The Story 003.jpg

Introducing Irish Nigerian rap artist and musician OG The Story with his brand new solo EP titled Evolution By Any Means. Raised in Lagos and based in Dublin, OG The Story is striving to live up to the meaning of his full name Olusegun Gbadebo, which translates to “The Lord conquers, bring the crown” in Yoruba, which is why, whether it is through the music on this new project, or as a diversity and inclusion lead in his corporate world, or actively tackling youth violence in his community, he is passionate about attaining his highest potential and helping others do the same.

1. So tell me, how did it all begin? What sparked your love for music?
My earliest memories of my love for music are those of being at 'grown folk' parties in Nigeria, feeling the cool vibes of traditional music artists like King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. I fell in love with the ability of artists to express emotions in a way that infected their audience. I went on to be heavily influenced by hip hop from the US and found myself miming performances of the likes of 2pac on stage at school. I then got in the habit of having fun in freestyle cyphers where I was recognised for having some potential.

2. Who are some artists that influence you and that you want to work with in the future?
I decided to take my pen game serious after listening to Big L. I was a big Cassidy fan for his punchlines. Fela Anikulapo kuti influenced me with his passion for freedom. I am influenced on a consistent basis by great music. I am open to work with anyone I have a good vibe with.

3. Your new album is about to drop and we here at Wordplay can't wait but what were some of the struggles making this album during lock down?
I don't recall having any struggles making the album related to the lock down. I had to take a little pause with recording but that led me to finishing up the project with a fresh perspective. The challenge at the moment is not being able to connect with people physically for the launch but I'm good with that because everything always works out the way it's meant to.

4. How would you describe your sound?

Lyrical, thought provoking and soothing.

5. What's your proudest moment to date so far as an artist?

Making this album. I literally told myself "I can die now" when I finished making the project.

6. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?
You have something inside of you that you need to get out to the world..let that be your drive instead of going with the trend. Set your own trend and go for fulfilment instead of the glitter.

7. Are there any artists on your radar at the moment that we should check out?

Check out NC Grey, Slick Bullet and Ollie Bell.

8. What albums are on heavy rotation on your Spotify playlist currently?

I have been listening to the Jazz Rap playlist on Spotify lately. I like the smooth vibe.

9. What do you like to do when you're not making music?

I am currently learning how to Salsa. I also love taking in new information that stimulates my being in the form of books, video or audio. I also long for relaxing with great company.

10. Name three things you can't live without?

Me, myself and I.

Thanks for taking the time out to chat with me and the best of luck with the album and for the future.
