10 Questions - The Allergies

See this content in the original post

Yes, yes people! We're back with another round of 10 questions, finding out a little more about some of our favourite music makers, keeping it light and giving space to find out what's happening in their musical worlds and beyond! This time round we have Bristol based production duo / DJ heavyweights The Allergies. Let's do this!

What’s your name, chosen craft and where are you based?

Roy: Roy aka DJ Moneyshot, from The Allergies. I’m a producer, magazine journalist, and DJ, based in Bristol.

Adam: Adam aka Rackabeat, from The Allergies. I too am a producer and DJ, I also run music production and workshops for kids and grown ups.

How would you describe your sound?

Roy: Little beat.

Adam: Infectious

Who or what do you consider to be the biggest influence on your music?

Roy: Golden era hip-hop and the pioneers of sample-led music like Prince Paul, DJ Shadow, The Avalanches, and The Wiseguys.

Adam: Drum and Bass got me into breakbeats, so the sample dons like Calibre had a massive rub on me early on but I always had a love for classic Hip Hop and funky jams.

What’s the proudest moment to date for you as an artist?

Roy: Back to back ‘album of the day’ awards on 6music for our first two LPs.

Adam: Probably hearing our first ever DJ mix / Interview on 6 Music. Or hitting No.3 in the Hip Hop charts on iTunes.

Do you have any advice for our readers who may be trying to play the mad game of music?

Roy: Copy the people you like to start, then find your own voice. And make music all the time but only finish the beats that rise to the top.

Adam: Be yourself, stay away from trying to follow trends, find your sound and stick to it. Work silly hard, play your music to friends and peers to get feedback. Don’t be lazy with your production; push for that last 10% of polish.

Name 3 people you would love to work with and why?

Roy: Chip-Fu from the Fu-Schnickens, Das FX, and lesser known Nine alias, MC Froggy Frog, as the whole thing would be wonderful gibberish.

Adam: Loyle Carner, Ty and Alice Russell. I’d love to push more British music to the masses and hopefully these artists aren’t too far out of sight!

What have you got planned for the not so distant future?

Roy: The new album Steal The Show, a couple of dope remixes (of us, and other people), and a big old UK and European live tour.

Adam: We’re about to hit Shambala Festival in Canada! That one’s been on the bucket list for a while!

What’s the album you’ve played more than any other?

Roy: Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back. I wore that tape out!

Adam: A Tribe Called Quest’s Beats, Rhyme’s and Life. Everyone bangs on about Midnight Marauders being their best work, but this pisses all over it in my opinion!

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Roy: DJ Andy Smith, Cardiff Uni, 1998 ish. Epic set. The way he flipped genres and styles inspired me to be that funky and brave.

Adam: John Butler Trio - Brixton Accademy . Probably not what you were expecting but that dude knows show to put on a show. And I’m normally pretty underwhelmed by Hip Hip shows!

Name three things you can’t live without?

Roy: Clean drinking water. Viz magazine. Ableton.

Adam: My ladies (The Mrs and My Daughter), Wordplay magazine, My 45s!

Please can you nominate another contestant and provide us with a question for them on your behalf?

Roy: Pete Issac (45 Live) - How is your vegetable patch coming along?

Any last words/shoutouts?

Adam: Big ups to Wordplay mag for always supporting us and independent music!

Roy: Yeah. What he said, plus “be good to yourselves and others”.

Steal The Show drops on 19th October via Jalepeno Records.
