Peckings is a label known for its Studio One based riddims especially original riddims with new artists on top of them. This year however they have entered more into the roots market with a strong new set of releases entitled the Fari Riddim which will be available soon on 10” wax.
I went along to the store which goes by the same name as the label and was lucky enough to catch one of the Price brothers (the Peckings family name) for an interview which you will be able to read in the next hard copy of Wordplay and to check some new music. The Fari Riddim features artists such as Ranking Joe, Gappy Ranks and Bunny Lye Lye who are huge names on the reggae circuit and they don’t disappoint! When I heard the familiar vocal style of Ranking Joe come in over what can only be described as a tuff tuff riddim track I was out of my chair sharp and rocking out in the living room. The bunny Lye Lye piece in particular is killer ‘Don’t want to be a rudeboy’, a take on the Johnny Clarke classic! I had been hearing this tune mentioned around by nuff people before hearing it and didn’t realise how heavy it was until I felt that bassline rumbling through my speakers! The riddim is a perfect example of mixing the UK and JA styles, with massive artists and the production is tighter than tight. (I haven’t even mentioned Macka B, Mikey Spice or Prince Malachi who are the other artists that grace this riddim).
Once you take a listen to the tunes you will know what I’m talking about and I’m sure these tunes will be played in dancehalls throughout the world very soon. All I recommend is that when this drops, get to your local record shop and snatch it up quick because it will be gone soon! Even better than that get yourself down to Askew Road in Sheperd’s Bush and buy it from the shop itself.
There are many other Peckings projects to be looking out for this summer including artists like Gappy Ranks and Ras Demo (aka jungle MC Demolition Man) so be sure to keep checking the site to see for updates on this wicked label.
