I could kick this piece off with a whole heap of tired and lazy Aussie jokes that you might find elsewhere but not here at Wordplay HQ. If you cast your mind back a few years, you might remember Davinche and a bunch of Grime heads hooking up with the BBC Concert Orchestra for a night at the Hackney Empire.
This time around, we’re downing a can of the drink that gives you wings and taking flight to the land down under. Roughly around tomorrow lunchtime (still can’t quite work out the time difference), the worlds of classical composition and electronic music are set to collide for the inaugural Red Bull Beat Suite concert.
Housed amongst the grandeur of the Melbourne Recital Centre, the Australian Youth Orchestra will come together with a host of Australian artists, DJ’s and producers (Ladi6, Galapagoose, Scratch 22, Amin Payne, DJ Perplex – for those who know a bit about music originating from Oz) for a genre crossing, musical mash-up; headlined by that guy that always seems to be short of a penny or two, Mr. Aloe Blacc.
Whilst this may not strictly be the usual noise you’ll hear from us, music is far too often confined to the “boundaries” of a specific scene. The Red Bull Beat Suite is offering a much needed new perspective and I’m always down for a little musical enlightenment! If this becomes a success, who knows? We may find the Beat Suite heading over to the UK in the not too distant future with some of our scene as the focus. Remember you heard it here first!
Unless you’re rocking your own private jet and departed around midday, I realise that you’re unlikely to make it to Melbourne in time to partake in the festivities. Fear not!
